Hi Tilly,
We give all Foundations participants a copy of Phil Race, 3rd edition, 'The Lecturer's TOOLKIT: a practical guide to assessment, learning and teaching' which we refer to throughout the 2 day workshop in key sessions. We also use a handout , Ch.1 'Changing University Teaching'from Biggs, 'Teaching for Quality Learning at University', 2003, to share thinking on different approaches/strategies to 'narrow the gap' in teaching the diversity of students from different backgrounds, motivations and capacities for learning. The combination of Race and other key resources works well.
Cheers

Hi all
We're on the hunt for a replacement academic staff induction text/s. For several years, new USC staff have received copies of Murphy E. 1998, Lecturing at University, CEA Publications, Curtin University. (new teaching staff) and Bertola, P. & Murphy, E., 1994, Tutoring at University, CEA Publications, Curtin University. (new teaching staff and sessionals). These are no longer in print.
I'd be thankful for responses as to what text/s you use/recommend. I'll compile a summary of responses at the end of October and circulate back to the lists.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Cheers
Tilly

Hi Tilly
I would recommend Maureen Bell's Herdsa Guide on Peer Observation
Partnerships (2005) if you are using peer review of teaching as a
framework for your induction program.
This year I moved away from a core text (such as Biggs & Tang, 2007),
have been highly selective about articles and excerpts from texts that
we use, and thus have pared down considerably the amount of resources we
provide for participants. We offered only three articles per topic, and
made those articles the focus of the learning activities for that
session. This approach has been well received by our Foundations
participants, and I found it more satisfying from a facilitator's
perspective too. It seemed to better facilitate discussions about issues
and concepts within that literature, and they were not overwhelmed.
The Resources sub project group of the ALTC Preparing Academic Teachers
in Higher Education (PATHE) project will be identifying resources for
Foundations programs as we indicated at the recent JCU event.
Regards
Gail

Hi all,
We're still using Cannon & Newble (2000) A handbook for Teachers in
Universities and Colleges - A Guide to improving Teaching Methods. 4th
Edition. Kogan Page. It's basic enough for those who are likely to be
frightened off by 'jargon' - but also provides reading lists to extend
further.
The book pre-dates current technologies of course.
For these we refer to Crisp, G (2007) The e-Assessment Handbook. Continuum.
ISBN 0-8264-9628-8.
What is clear from this book is the power of assessment to drive learning -
and a focus on the underlying learning principles - alignment with learning
objectives and activities - which apply to assessments of all kinds.
We also provide participants with access to Phil Race (n.d) "In at the Deep
End" Leeds Metropolitan University www.leedsmet.ac.uk for many useful tips,
to satisfy immediate teaching needs, but at the same time to provide useful
discussion starters for delving deeper and helping new participants in
beginning to develop at their own 'learning and teaching philosophies'.

Hello everyone.
It was great to see familiar and so many new faces at the Colloquium in
Townsville in September. Thanks to Lisa and Amanda for planning and
hosting us in the tropics.
Susan Grimes has indicated that the University of Newcastle is willing
to host the Colloquium in 2009. Thank you for stepping forward.
I am sure we will hear from Susan and her colleagues in the not too
distant future as they begin to plan.
Cheers
Allan

Hi Tilly
I'm not sure if you were able to attend Peter Kandlebinder's (with Tai
Peseta) session at the colloquium
i thought this was a very interesting session on the key concepts taught
in academic development programs
the top three most commonly taught concepts that tended to be strongly
interrelated were constructive alignment, student approaches to learning
(and teacher approaches) and reflective practice. at UWS we use Biggs
and Tang (2007) in our foundations program which is a very accessible
text about the first two key concepts
we are considering whether it might be useful to combine chapters from
Biggs and Tang and key articles on reflective practice
hope this helps
regards
