sendinsuggestions

Dear Colleagues,
An item that interests me is to explore ways in which academics might
support students' academic writing development in the mainstream:
1) by providing students with tools for recognising and using the language
of their discipline (a simplified process of genre analysis) and
2) by designing assessment rubrics that will efficiently provide students
with explicit feedback on their formal written language.
I believe that students' lack of understanding and skills in the area of
formal, discipline-specific writing may be responsible for much of the
inadvertent plagiarism that is identified. In my view this issue is too
great to be fixed by requiring students who are identified as at risk, or as
having plagiarised, to undertake generic ('remedial') workshops. I'd be
happy to lead a workshop to explore possibilities, if there is some interest
in the idea.

Hi Ann
Will the list of suggested topics be put to the list for the members to
comment on before decisions are made?
I also thought that something of interest is how we are addressing 'graduate
attributes' as a topic for discussion in Foundations programs. What is
happening with the national projects in this area may be of interest to some
members (although some may have attended state based forums sponsored by the
national projects). But at least the discussion with respect to Foundations
programs would be useful.
Cheers
Allan

Dear Colloquium participants and CADAD members,
As you are aware the 2009 Foundations Colloquium will be held in Adelaide at
the Stamford Plaza from the afternoon of Tuesday November 3 until lunchtime
Thursday November 5.
The Colloquium will provide an opportunity for participants and CADAD
members to be presented with the findings of the ALTC funded Preparing
Academics for Teaching in Higher Education (PATHE) project on the Tuesday
afternoon and will be followed by a day and a half of activities suggested
by you. We have received some suggestions for activities but as the deadline
is fast approaching we hope to receive more.
Please send us your ideas regarding the topics you would like included in
the colloquium so we can ensure it addresses your needs. All suggestions
should be sent to Ann Luzeckyj ann.luzeckyj at flinders.edu.au by 22 May 2009.
We look forward to hearing from you,
