Hullo Tai,
I would like to comment on a couple of points at UC.
While the policy is quite clear, it really gets down to support by
Deans in particular faculties. While some deans strongly promote the
policy others would see it as a diversion from more important activities
such as publication and research. Another point is that in theory HR
and the probation process should ensure compliance with stated policy
but the real checking-up and follow-through is not done as well, despite
the fact that there are clear records of attendance, completion etc.
provided by the Teaching and Learning Centre. If academic developers
push hard in this area it comes across as self-serving in relation to
our own programs.
Another interesting development - yet to be fully realized - is that if
staff attend all sessions which amounts to 30 hours - they can apply for
a special category of leave that is in the HR database, so the rationale
is to recognise the time staff spend on program attendance and provide
equivalent relief that they can use for their own purposes.

Hi Tai,
Here are the University of Canberra responses to your questions.
We have documented the requirement in policy and it is available in on
the web in our policy database
(https://guard.canberra.edu.au/policy/policy.php?pol_id=3053).
The policy relates to staff new to the University with less than two
years tertiary teaching experience.
Staff are required to complete the foundations program within the first
two years of their employment. The program is completed once.
Looking forward to hearing with others do.
Cheers
Coralie

Hi folks,
Quick query: La Trobe's planning to renew some of its policies and
procedures re: its Foundations Program. Can I get a quick feel for the
following? Do any of your universities:
- document the compulsory aspect of completing Foundations in academic
policy (ie, other than a letter of offer)?
- do those policies relate to existing staff and/or just new
appointments
- do those programs have an expiry period? For eg, folks do it again
after a set number of years.
Feel free to email off line t.peseta at latrobe.edu.au. Appreciate your
time.
Cheers, Tai
